Puerto Madero |
| |
This area of Buenos Aires, on the river margin, gained importance since the recycling of the antique harbour docks in the early '90s. Puerto Madero area was originally born at the end of the XIX century, as an alternative to the antique Buenos Aires port, created in the colonial époque. Its structure -with closed docks- and the considerable increase of the ships size at the beginning of the XX century originated the construction of a new port. For that reason, Puerto Madero, despite its strategic location -near downtown- entered a process of progressive inactivity.
By the end of the XX century the works of restructuring of the zone took place, giving to the district the aspect it presents nowadays. In that way we can say that, despite its history, Puerto Madero is the newest district in Buenos Aires. Currently it concentrates numerous office buildings and a wide commercial and gastronomic offer, including dozens of restaurants and discos. Residential buildings in this district are new and offer a complete infrastructure including swimming pool, sauna and gym, among other services. Lots of new buildings are still under construction in this area where visitors will also find cinemas, the floating casino, some museum ships, various five stars hotels, the Argentine Catholic University (UCA), art galleries and the Ecological Reserve. |
